does playing games count as research?

the good thing about developing an interactive game is that i get to play games. Have actually been looking at games that are relevant to my idea, not just playing random games (much). Have found quite a few that requires the user to escape from a room by collecting things and solving puzzles. I realise this type of interactivity isn't new and won't be earth shattering but its just nice to look at different types of gameplay.

Gamershood has many games like the aforementioned so screen grabs a plenty are going in my sketchbook.

I think playing games is great research. You can't review a restaurant and suggest improvements to the food if you don't eat there first. It's the same with interactive design. I spoke to a rep from Nixon McInnes at Dscape, who told me she would not consider hiring anyone for a web design job unless they had experienced all aspects of the web, and taken part in it's most popular trends, and I really see the logic in that. To understand something, you need to experience it. So, to develop games, play them! If your into problem solving games have a look at Luca Arts Monkey Island. Classic games. 3 is the best in my opinion, one and two are way overpixelated, and 4 loses the core spirit of the game. It's a point click, with a loveable wannabee pirate, who has to solve lots of puzzles to stay married to his govenor girlfriend and keeping defeating evil pirate lechuck. The way to win is to use a bizarre sense of logic, like getting eaten by a snake to pick things out of his stomach, or to give someone headlice to cause a scene to empty the barbers to steal the scissors to cut down a patch of overgrown weeds to get to the snake in the first place. Lot's of monkeys too. In 4, the best thing about it was you learn monkey talk, and make poses and learn the language to defeat them. Brilliant family fun, wonderful games, incredibly funny. Look it up. Monkey Island. Lucasarts. (as in George)

Just to add to last post, thought more about MI3, the plot of that particular game is that Guybrush proposes to his finacees, using a cursed ring he found in LeChucks ship at the start, and she turns to gold. He has to then uncurse her, at which point there is a funny scene where she gets mad at him for having used a cursed ring, and then he has to save her when LeChuck captures her..or get them off the island...or something, memory is a bit foggy. The game is a bit like a cartoon, and the jokes are very witty and well thought out, so they appealt to kids and have deaper meanings for grownups. You have to be quite intelligent to win the game.

A great website about the game with plot/screengrabs and characters bio's is: http://www.worldofmi.com/thegames/monkey3/index.php

and you can get a demo here: http://www.gamershell.com/download_4662.shtml

Finally, another game I heard about today is The Girlfriend Experience (http://girlfriend.mediamatic.net/) which is where the avatars are real people that you can control. Might be worth looking at. I have put alot of comments on it on my blog if your interested in reading them, becuase I havn't made up my mind if I think it's good or bad yet.

Mi! But I was going to mention Monkey Islaaand!! Oh well...I remember as a school kid having a fight with a friend on which adventure game company was the best. Yes we were (probly still are geeks). But puzzles and picking up things I can reference you to a whole bunch. You've already been led to Lucasarts. Well they had this game called Sam n Max hit the road. Evidently with the takeover of consoles and action games they dropped the release of a new one. The designers though made their own company and still release episode-like games of Sam n Max.

Also if you're up for it check out:
Kings Quest (8 games)
Space Quest (6 games)
Leisure suit Larry (7 games and one missing)
Phantasmagoria (the first game to use live motion capture acting -succesfuly- and an alternative ending)
And the one that will relate more to what you were saying about fairytales are:
Mixed-Up Fairy Tales
Mixed-Up Mother Goose Enhanced
Oh and i beat you to the comments thing! hurray!

Realise I got a bit carried away commenting about just the one game before, but have a few other to sugest that revolve around collection and problem solving:

Simon the Sorceror ...about a wizard. Personally I find him a bit annoying.

Tomb Raider...I know they get thought of as mindless action, but the quests involved actually require you to logically problem solve using objects you collect too.

Fairies is a lovely game, not one where you collect, but you have to match all the pretty fairies by colour to set the free. Nice and relaxing to play in the dark with a few scented candles burning and a blanket wrapped around you. Really nice mood music.

Never played it, but heard Theif is a collecting game. Looks quite good.

I think LOST would make an excellent problem solving game. There are theories about that the show is an actual game and the people are characters. but I don't agree. It is being made intoa computer game now I think. Might be worth thinking about.

Playing games ALWAYS, let me repeat that ALWAYS counts as research, just like watching a film does.
